Japan downgrades travel alert for 54 countries

The Japanese government on Wednesday lowered its travel advisory for 54 countries and a region, including Indonesia and the Philippines, and is no longer urging citizens of Japan to avoid unnecessary travel to those countries.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the travel warning for those regions has been downgraded from the second-lowest Level 2 on a scale of four to Level 1, which encourages Japanese nationals visiting such places to “remain fully alert.”

Twenty-three countries and a region from the Middle East and Africa, including Egypt and South Africa, 11 countries in Europe, including Russia and Ukraine, 10 countries in Asia and the Pacific, including Pakistan and Myanmar, and 10 in Latin America are also now officially classified as Level 1.

A total of 35 places, including Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and Turkey, were still under Level 2 warning at the same time.

In addition, Level 3 advisories, which urge individuals to avoid all travel, were dropped to Level 2 for 41 other countries. Among these are Kyrgyzstan, four in the Caribbean, three in Eastern Europe, and 33 in the Middle East and Africa.

The United States, Britain, France, Germany, South Korea, China, and other countries and regions have already been promoted to Level 1.

There are currently 125 locations classified as Level 1 overall, whereas the number of Level 2 sites has decreased to 76. No countries fit into Levels 3 or 4.

The ministry stated that it continues to advise anyone who intend to travel abroad to get completely immunized in order to avoid contracting COVID-19.
